Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Dictators and Democracies Today The genesis of this book is interesting and significant. Five years ago, in the winter of 1930, Mr. John Martin, Professor of International Relations at Rollins College, Florida, held a series of conferences on the relationship of the United States to varied and serious problems of foreign affairs. They were intended only for students. In following years adults, by request, were admitted; lectures were added; and this spring (1935) it was impossible to seat all those attending any one of the ten lectures in the largest auditorium in Winter Park. The audiences included college presidents and professors, writers of national reputation, lawyers and ministers, financiers and eminent women. Cars brought regular listeners from resorts thirty to fifty miles away. This book consists of the material, somewhat enlarged and revised, used by Mr. Martin in his addresses. It is doubtful, if one combed the country over, whether there could anywhere be found a more impartial, or realistic, or better-tempered treatment of the highly controversial affairs of this troubled world than Mr. Martin gives us in this volume. Some of those who attended the lectures may have taken issue with certain of the speaker´s interpretations; no one doubted the objectivity of his approach or the sanity of his outlook. A treatment without a trace of propaganda, its sole purpose was to broaden understanding and clarify thought. To some of those who listened to the lectures, as I did, the profound interest invoked was scarcely secondary in its significance to the subject matter presented.
