I have been most insistent that it should be written, and am allowed the privilege of adding to it a preface. I will avail myself of the opportunity thus given, to say why I was so desirous this book should be written. It is because, after an intimate acquaintance of nearly thirty years, I treasure the thought of him as that of the man of all whom I have known, who realized most fully the ideal of a true Christian layman and of a true son of the Church of England. The memory of such a man is a glorious heritage, and in this work that heritage takes a form in which it may be handed on among his descendants from generation to generation.
