Excerpt from The Closing of the Irish Parliament The first step towards the closing of the Irish Parliament was taken in the year 1494. A measure, known as Poynings´ Law, was then enacted, whereby the Parliament of Ireland was forbidden to assemble until the Lord Deputy and his Council had first informed the King of the Acts which were proposed for adoption, and had received for those Acts the approval of his Majesty and his English Council, together with a licence, under the great seal of England, for the summoning of Parliament. Poynings´ Law was called forth by a daring insurrection on the part of the Irish Deputy (the Earl of Kildare) and his Parliament, by whom an impostor named Lambert Simnel was crowned as King Edward VI., at the Cathedral of Christ Church, Dublin. Simnel pretended to be the Earl of Warwick, who was head of the House of York, and a candidate for the Crown, in opposition to the reigning monarch, Henry VII.
