Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from More About Italy and India Some sixty years ago candidates joining the Canadian Presbyterian Mission in the Malwa district of Central India (now the mission field of the United Church of Canada) were required to study, as one of their text books, a small treatise entitled Religion Weighed. It was written in Hindi and printed in the Nagari characters and had for its theme a Christian catechist addressing an imaginary audience of illiterate, unenlightened Hindus. He is speaking of the religion they profess and practice, showing its inadequacy and inability to give salvation to its devotees, and finally he proceeds to explain how the Christian religion can enlighten the soul and give full and free salvation to all, through faith in Jesus Christ who is the true Incarnation of God. As I was at that time quite ignorant concerning Hinduism and its many gods and goddesses it made an impression on my mind which has extended to this day. So, as I have still my old Hindi copy of the book, it has occurred to me that a free translation of it might interest some Canadian friends, helping them to realize something of the depth of ignorance and superstition into which Hinduism has sunk so many of India´s people. You may think that some of the talks recorded here are crude and childish, but, in spite of the successful missionary work that has been carried on for the past one hundred years or so, I am convinced that among the 500,000 villages of India there are many thousands of people who are still untouched by the Christian message, and still unreached by the comparative few who are workers in that great harvest field.
