An author is profoundly interested in his own book. The thought that is in it may be very meagre and very vapid, but it is not so to him. Every book, I suppose, is the result of one of two processes. Either the thought struggles in the man for deliverance, or the man struggles after some thought that he may make a book. In the first case he is interested in his readers through the thought; in the other there is a garrulous interest - the enjoyment of being heard. In both the book has a history which no one knows but himself - something that the reader ought by all means to be made aware of. Of course the reader is going to be as much interested in the book as he is himself. Any suspicion to the contrary would disparage the reader, and the generous author will be guilty of no such rudeness as that. Is it not in human nature to desire some account of all those things which interest us? At any rate, it is in human nature to give some explanation of one´s own work. The very intelligent and interested reader must pause a moment upon opening the book. The author feels confidential with him just at this interesting moment.
