Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Memorials of Eminent Yale Men, Vol. 1: A Biographical Study of Student Life, and University Influences During the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries In presenting these volumes to the public, I wish to express my special obligations to my predecessor as Secretary of Yale University, Professor Franklin Bowditch Dexter, Litt.D. His scholarly historical researches and his spirit of cooperation have helped me greatly in carrying out my purpose to show the influence of the University on its most eminent graduates and on the nation´s history. My wife´s encouragement, suggestions, and criticisms have also been of the greatest service, especially through constant emphasis on the need of making the biographies as human and vital as possible, without in any way sacrificing definiteness and accuracy in detail. I am also under obligations to Mr. E. Byrne Hackett of the Yale University Press for advice on matters bearing on the bookmaker´s art, and for interest manifested in many helpful ways. For the Index I am indebted to my friend, Mr. John Fletcher. Miss Lottie G. Bishop and Mr. William Bedell have also rendered assistance in the preparation of the manuscript for the printers and in the various stages of the work incident to publication. I offer these volumes to the Yale Brotherhood as a slight tribute of appreciation of what the University as a beneficent Alma Mater has meant to me. I am hopeful that the reading of them, in connection with a study of the Memorial Hall collection of engravings and autographs of the men here commemorated, may tend to strengthen devotion to the University and to its ideals.
