Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Popular Christianity: Its Transition State and Probable Development I am anxious to anticipate a probable misapprehension of the object of these pages, by declaring that I am far from wishing to establish Christianity on a basis merely rationalistic. I by no means assert the rightful authority of simple reason over the higher instincts of the soul (for this would be to subordinate the conscience, which is the interpreter of the inner life, to the understanding, which is a co-ordinate power), but I am anxious to establish the actual identity of the highest results of reason and conscience. A Christianity truly Catholic must offend neither the reason nor the conscience, but, whilst acknowledging the "Divinity that dwells within us," do no violence to that natural reason which forms the essential law of our outward life.
