Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Nordisa an Opera in Three Acts Custom having decreed that the privilege of inflicting prefaces shall be no longer accorded to novelists, but only to librettists, the author of this book reluctantly complies with the edict. The plot of "Nordisa" is partly taken from an old French melodrama, which has long been regarded as common property by playwrights. The libretto has purposely been written on old-fashioned lines rather than according to modern models, partly because it does not pretend to be a Musik-drama, or grand opera, but simply a Singspiel, or romantic light opera, such as Wagner recommended all beginners to write. As regards the music the composer has attempted nothing unusual, unless the endeavour to please the general public rather than to educate or astonish them may be so considered. The indispensable "local colour" has been sought in three instances (the Cradle-Song and Hailing in Act I. and Nordisa´s cattle-call in Act II.) by the use of actual Norwegian melodies, but in all other cases merely by an attempted imitation of the Scandinavian style. Should the general result, however, be deemed not so much Norsk as English, the composer will be by no means sorry - nor, perhaps, will the public.
