Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Revolutionary Worthies of the Medical Staff Gentlemen: - I make this effort to bring to your notice some of the events connected with the Medical Department of the Army of the Revolution, as well as to call attention to many members of that noble profession who were important factors in that struggle. I fully realize the magnitude of the undertaking and feel unequal to it, especially as a large country practice ties me very closely, and leaves me but little time that I am able to call my own. In this humble effort to rescue from the oblivion that time throws around all human actions, the names of those patriots of the Revolution who belonged to the medical profession, I only attempt to preserve and perpetuate the memory of those whose biographies have not yet been written. That period in our history was one which demanded the aid of every citizen who had the intelligence to appreciate liberty and the courage to oppose tyranny. From a review of the various actors on the stage of American affairs it appears that when the principles of free government were being evoked and matured no class of society or profession seemed to have deserved higher praise for their efforts to promote this result than the physicians: constant association with all classes makes the medical man acquainted with every shade of opinion of his day, and makes him the confidant and the counsellor of the masses in questions of common interest. Historians have over and over again eulogized the statesman, the orator, the soldier, the tragedian, and the clergyman, who took part in the efforts for independence, but the self-denying sacrifices and services of the physician have been almost entirely overlooked. The Medical history of the Revolution properly begins with the casualties caused by the first collision between the British troops and the Colonists. It is, however, exceedingly difficult now, to mark the exact period when petition ceased and protest began; when, from mere words of discussion tumults were excited and the Colonists came into collision with the troops.
