Family tradition among the Guilds has handed down many incidents of La Fayette´s childhood, while they are trivial in themselves, but interesting because they show his braver, intelligence and generosity to have been innate, forecasting his illustrious and honorable manhood. The same child, who defended his playmate from a large and ferocious dog, prevented a serious encounter between fellow-students of the University. The Guild estate embraced a tract of land on the outskirts of Tuscaloosa, whose shady groves and clear murmuring brook were the happy hunting grounds of the Guild boys and their comrades.
