Excerpt from On the Diseases of the Kidney, Their Pathology, Diagnosis, and Treatment: With an Introductory Chapter on the Anatomy and Physiology of the Kidney One of the primary objects which I have proposed to myself in the composition of the present volume, is, to give such a history of renal diseases as will enable the practitioner to distinguish their various forms and stages during the lifetime of the patient, while an accurate diagnosis in available for the practical purposes of prognosis and treatment. A knowledge of healthy structure and functions is the best and, indeed, the only secure basis for pathological science; I have therefore devoted an introductory chapter to a consideration of the anatomy and physiology of the kidney. In some respects I have modified the views of renal pathology which, at different times during the last six years, I have published in the Medico-Chirurgical Transactions, and elsewhere. These modified views have resulted, partly from my own continued researches, and partly from the labours and criticisms of others.
