Excerpt from Birch´s Management and Medical Treatment of Children in India This work which is probably the oldest professional book still in publication in India was originally written by Surgeon Henry Hurry Goodeve of the Bengal Medical Service and published on March 15, 1844, as a very small volume, privately printed, under the title, Hints for the General Management of Children tn India in the absence of Professional advice. It is of interest, perhaps, here to quote the original Preface to this first edition as it has been the keynote of all the subsequent ones. "In offering these few pages to my patients, I do not, for a moment, pretend to give them a complete treatise on children´s diseases. Nor do I wish, in any way, to prevent their taking medical advice, where it can he obtained. On the contrary, I would earnestly caution them never to trust to their own judgment, when they can procure professional assistance.
