Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The America of Today, Being Lectures Delivered at the Local Lectures Summer Meeting of the University of Cambridge, 1918 The lectures here brought together in permanent form have been chosen with a special object in view. A large, and happily an increasing number of English people are interesting themselves in American affairs and American activities. But one knows from the questions frequently put to one, that they are sometimes puzzled by references to things which in America are assumed - often gratuitously enough - to be matters of common knowledge. It is hoped that this book will help to overcome these difficulties and make the movement of American life a little more intelligible to busy English readers. The Cambridge Summer Meeting was held last August and the discourses addressed to it, therefore, were read or spoken under the shadow of the war. No attempt has been made to adjust the printed lectures to the bewildering changes which have taken place in the past nine months; they are offered to the public as they were delivered to the audience for which they were prepared. This has led to the retention of a certain number of apparently repetitious or contradictory passages. There is, however, a great advantage in seeing the same group of facts from varying points of view and in different contexts. As regards contradictions they will be found to be apparent rather than real. American life is so complex and the American background so various that the most cautious generalization may often be supplemented by a statement which appears to contradict it. Turning from facts to judgments it is perhaps needless to say that each writer is alone responsible for such theories or opinions as may be expressed in his contribution.
