Excerpt from Selected Poems The poems presented in this volume have been selected from a collection of her distinguished father´s works by Mrs. William H. Armstrong, of New York and Washington. The author, William J. Grayson, was a Southern gentleman of the old school. He was a representative of that race of men who set high standards of patriotism, Christian manhood, morality and ethics for the guidance of the generation of Americans, particularly at the South, that was born of the men and women who cemented with their blood and tears the enduring foundation upon which has been reared the mighty fabric of this Government. His was a type that now, unhappily for the times and manners, is almost, if not quite, extinct. Mr. Grayson was one of a group of men at Charleston, South Carolina, that with high courage and fortitude strove to avert the pitiful tragedy of the Civil War. Others of this group were James Louis Petigru and Judge King. This trio of names is as familiar and revered in South Carolina as are those of the Hamptons, of Calhoun, of Hayne and of Hamilton. He and Petigru and King pleaded with powerful logic, tempered by loving kindness, against the hazard of war. With prophetic vision they foresaw its results, and from the rigors of these they tried earnestly to protect their people.
