Thiers, 1870-1873 Mon cher ancien College, - I set out yesterday evening as I had promised you, and was, I think, the last person to use the Northern Railway, for the engineer officer charged with the task of cutting communications told me that he had waited for me to pass before blowing up the bridge at Creil. I reached London at seven in the morning, and finding no lodging anywhere, so great is the number of foreigners here, and especially French, I was obliged to stay at the Embassy, where, thanks to M. Tissot, a kind of camping-place has been got ready for me. I have had an opportunity of observing, while receiving various people this morning, that public opinion is moving in our favour, and even that the news of my arrival had given a distinct fillip to men´s minds, a circumstance that has reassured me a little as to the usefulness of my mission, which, to my mind, was very doubtful.
