Excerpt from The Causation, Course, and Treatment of Reflex Insanity in Women The following pages were communicated to the American Medical Association in 1865, at its session in Boston, and were printed in its Transactions for that year. The writer has been requested to republish his memoir by physicians interested in gynæcology, who have desired a copy in a separate form for their book-shelves, or have thought the topic deserving more general attention; and he was duly authorized to do so by a formal vote of the Association, at its session at Cincinnati in 1867. Many causes have combined to prevent accedence to the wish of his friends and the repeated request of his publishers, chief among them, perhaps, the feeling that, as he had sown the seed, it should be for others to develop the tender growth of a better practice. He has cherished the lingering hope, moreover, that he might some time find leisure to prepare a work upon this interesting subject of reflex insanity more worthy its intrinsic and practical importance.
