Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Works of the Late Reverend and Learned Mr. Joseph Stennett, Vol. 3: Containing Twelve Sermons, Never Before Published; With an Alphabetical Index of Matter There is no desire more natural and necessary to men than that of being happy; and yet none is more abused than this, because most men seek happiness in the pleasures of sin: but that is not where it ought to be expected, or where it ever will be effectually found. And so in seeking the benefits and advantages of society, of order, and government, the corrupt nature of men engages them to pursue things in such a manner as that they augment their guilt, and likewise their misery, instead of alleviating it: for while they avoid solitude, and delight themselves in society, they are ready to follow the multitude to do evil and while they seek the advantage of order, and government, instead of regular submission to their superiors, they often yield themselves up to be governed by them after such a manner as is inconsistent with their allegiance to the supreme Being. They devote their consciences to them; in which fort they ought not to be the servants of men They make them lords of their faith, and of their consciences, and obey them in such instances wherein their obedience to men is inconsistent with what they owe to God.
