Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Humours of the Country "Is Marriage a Success? I should say so," remarked a farmer. "Why, there´s my Hesba gits up in the mornin,´ milks six cows, gits breakfast, starts four children to school, feeds the hens, likewise the hogs, likewise some motherless sheep, skims twenty pans of milk, washes the clothes, gits dinner, et cetery. Think I could hire anybody to do it for what she gits?" The Crows. - The farmer was very short-handed, and had been compelled to engage a town boy, whose knowledge of agriculture and kindred subjects was extremely limited. One day he sent the youth to a wheat field to see if there were any crows among his wheat. When the boy returned from the field his master asked him if there were any crows there. The boy said he counted twenty-two. "Did you drive them away?" asked the farmer. "No," replied the lad; "I thought they belonged to you." Singular. - "How is it, Mr Brown," said the mill-owner to the farmer, "that when I came to measure those five barrels of apples I bought from you I found them nearly a barrel short?" "Singular, very singular, for I put them up in some of your own flour barrels. "Ahem! Did, eh? Well, perhaps I made a mistake. Fine weather, is´nt it." The Amateur Farmer. - "But your amateur farming doesn´t pay expenses, does it?" "I hope so. I am going to write a book about it." Ail Grow. Alas! when we our wild oats sow With blood and sweat and toil, How few of them we ever throw On rocks or sterile soil! Why he Left. - An Irishman in this country, was one day remarking in a village inn on the cheapness of provisions in Ireland.
