It curled upwards in the blue frosty air, with which it gradually incorporated, giving place to a succession of smoke which followed the track of its evanescent predecessor. The night was well advanced when the cavalcade came in sight of the city, which a bright moonlight and a clear atmosphere enabled them to distinguish at a considerable distance.
