Excerpt from Spanish Composition The aim of this book is to offer, in a form which, it is hoped, may be interesting as well as instructive, material in Spanish prose composition for the use of students in high school, college, or university who have already acquired a knowledge of the fundamental grammatical principles of the language. The book also aims to furnish suitable material not only for writing Spanish, but also for conversational work; and, while the different grammatical principles have not been formally taken up, it is hoped that the idiomatic drill which accompanies each lesson will prove valuable not only in fixing in the student´s memory the expressions used in the Spanish originals but also in strengthening his hold on the elementary portion of grammar work. In using the book as much emphasis as possible should be laid upon the necessity and advantage of thoroughly mastering the vocabulary of the Spanish text with which each lesson begins. The English exercise which follows is based upon the Spanish, and, as far as may be, employs the same vocabulary. Only the occasional new words introduced are to be found in the English-Spanish vocabulary, and the fact should be thoroughly impressed on the student that a correct and profitable translation of the English exercise will be possible only after a careful study of the Spanish original. The idiomatic drill which forms a part of each lesson is designed to present, in a slightly changed form, the principal idiomatic turns of expression employed in the Spanish. These sentences may profitably be gone over at sight during the course of the recitation, or they may well be assigned for outside preparation.
