Excerpt from The History of My Friend I have long had it in contemplation to address you, on a subject which is not only very interesting to your excellency and a particular friend of mine, but to all the world besides, and to all the people of the United States in particular. I have been compelled to postpone the address, until this time, for various reasons, (which reasons still exist, as the back and belly of my friend will attest,) such as my friend being thrown upon the world at the age of thirty-seven, or thereabouts, in a state of poverty, without any profession, excepting that of arms, and without health, for he lost his precious health in the service of his country; and this extremely interesting situation rendered it impossible for me, in behalf of my friend, to have put pen to paper until this moment. It is a story worth your excellency´s hearing, and worth the whole worlds hearing. Not but what there are many as good - perhaps better: but this being perfectly within my own knowledge, I cannot be mistaken in the facts - and, as I intend to dedicate this story to your excellency, I hope your excellency will take it to heart, and make the best possible use of it; such as reading it to your whole family - to the members of both houses of congress - to the honorable the board of officers, who made the selection for the military peace establishment, and, more especially, to all old women in pantaloons. My friend, who hath as honest and as warm a heart as ever God warmed, was bred a farmer, among the green mountains of Vermont.
