Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Brighton Chain Pier, Vol. 1: In Memoriam; Its History From 1823 to a Biographical Notice of Sir Samuel Brown, Its Designer and Constructor, and an Appendix (Legal Documents) At the request of many friends, and in view of the wide-spread interest manifested in all matters associated with the history of the Brighton Chain Pier, the present work has been published, to serve as an enduring (and, as the Author hopes, a not unworthy) memorial of the beautiful structure which has recently passed away. The best has been done with the comparatively scanty materials available for the purpose, and for all sins of omission and commission both friends and readers will kindly take the will for the deed. Special acknowledgments are deservedly due to Mr. John Haines and to Mr. W. J. Smith, J.P., of Brighton, for their valued advice and cordial assistance in connection both with the original and the present edition of "The Chain Pier: in Memoriam"; and also to Messrs. Howlett and Clarke, for affording the privilege of inspection and the taking of copies of deeds in their possession relating to the Manor on which the Chain Pier was erected; and to Mr. G. S. Godfree, their chief clerk. Acknowledgment must likewise be made of the courtesy and kindness of Mr. John Howard, of the Marine Palace and Pier Company, in permitting (at the request of Alderman Hawkes) the inspection and copying of deeds in his possession relating to the Chain Pier. To Mr. John Haines, Mr. W. J. Smith, J.P., Mr. J. H. Daniels, Mr. F. W. Simpson, and other gentlemen, sincere thanks are given for their readiness in lending illustrations for this work from their respective collections.
