It was the sub-title to the present volume which, as it were, brought me up with a round turn. " ... And Other Stories of the Sea" - the caption went down naturally, almost without thought. Why, certainly, stories of the sea! What else, if you please? I am accustomed to regard myself as a sailor, and what I write as being more or less directly the product of seafaring. The sea is my ground and origin; I have no other point of departure. I am a native of a latitude and longitude. The other day in the attic, overhauling a chest of old letters, I ran across a small pasteboard box containing a piece of shell-encrusted seaweed; it was one of the mementoes that came home among my father´s effects when he died on board his vessel in Bremerhaven the year before the war. On the box, in his handwriting, was this inscription: "A bit of weed from L -´s birthplace, washed on board the S. S. American on June 2nd, 1905, in 44° south latitude, South Atlantic Ocean, in the same kind of a S. W. gale in which he was born; picked up and salted down by his father, this being the first that any of the family ever have seen of that country."
