There is no attempt to offer a complete series of letters, but rather some are chosen to accompany or illustrate parts of the article "A Niece´s Memories," - used here as an introductory sketch, - which in turn must supplement the letters. The notes toward the end are merely such as are written to people living in the same town, or near by, and are intended for those who can see, between the lines, that Henry Adams was in the world but not wholly of it, and that what he has so beautifully ex pressed in literary form in the "Chartres," and in the "Prayer to the Virgin," was not only literature to him, but was also a part of his unspoken life.
