This grouping of aims will suffice to indicate the points to which my labors have been specially directed. I have sought to locate the book in chronology and history; to throw light on the question of its authorship; to show how the leading minds of that early age struggled and stumbled over the great problem of the sufferings of apparently good men, and how the Lord himself brought this great problem to issue in what we must regard as the ultimate and supreme moral purpose of the book. Quite aside from my method in previous volumes, I have appended to this a new translation, hoping in this concise form to give the reader a general view of the drift of thought and of the beauty of style which appear in the original.
