Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Organic Diseases of the Uterus: Being the Prize Essay to Which the Medical Society of London Awarded the Fothergillian Gold Medal for 1843 The Council of the Medical Society of London having selected as the subject of the Fothergillian Essay for 1843 "The Symptoms and Treatment of Organic Diseases of the Uterus," I was induced to write the following Treatise, which is now submitted to the public, and more especially to the members of the medical profession. The appointment which for several years past I have had the honour of filling at Guy´s Hospital has given me an opportunity of seeing no inconsiderable number of cases of uterine disease. This will not be doubted when I state that from one to two hundred out-patients, labouring under functional and organic disease of the womb, come week by week under my own personal inspection. To the following Essay, laid before the Council of the Medical Society, and to which was awarded the Fothergillian Gold Medal, I have made some slight additions.
