Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Early Life of Eamonn De Valera As explained in the Preface to the First Edition the manuscript of the Life of de Valera had many narrow escapes from the hands of the British military. But its troubles did not end here. It had been in print a little short of two weeks, selling at the rate of one hundred copies a day, when the Civil War commenced. Communications were interrupted, politics came into disrepute, and the sale of the book fell to about half a dozen copies a week. Shortly afterwards the National troops, in the course of the fighting, occupied the building where the books were stored and coming upon them and observing on the wrappers a photograph of de Valera, whom they sought but could not find, destroyed by bayonet thrusts and otherwise, 140 copies. The Board of Works, however, very kindly paid for these later on behalf of the Government, so the soldiers might, in the end, be described as good booksellers. Then followed a more serious incident. T. Fisher Unwin, the well-known London publishers, wrote: "This seems a fine book. Quote for 1,000 copies in sheets." The necessary quotation was prepared after consultation with the printers, but the day it reached the Publisher´s office, Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson was shot dead in London, and that ended the transaction. I have refrained from adding to this edition a chapter on the Civil War, for I think the less said about it at present the better.
