Excerpt from Diseases of the Heart and Aorta The researches in the great field of inner medicine have so multiplied in recent years that it has become highly desirable that we should have from time to time, in addition to the summaries of progress contained in the general text-books on practice, monographs which picture more completely the status of our knowledge in the several special divisions of the subject. In diseases of the circulatory system new methods of study have led to the discovery of many new facts, and a great many workers have been attracted during the last twenty years to this domain of cardiovascular inquiry. In the medical clinic at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Hirschfelder has during the past few years occupied himself especially with such studies. The present volume is an attempt to epitomize the actual condition of the subject at the present time, as viewed from the standpoint of an active investigator of extensive first-hand experience who has also a wide acquaintance with the literature of the physiology and pathology of the circulatory apparatus. The clearness and brevity of the presentation and the excellent arrangement of the material will, I am sure, appeal to students and practitioners of medicine. It is no easy matter adequately to combine the most recent results of anatomical, physiological, pathological, and clinical studies in a form which will satisfy the critical demands of the scientific investigator and at the same time be useful as a guide to the every-day practitioner. Especial attention has been paid in the volume to the practical facts of diagnosis and treatment; in the more theoretical portions there will be found evidence of careful, critical sifting, and an appreciation of the distinction between what is essential and what non-essential for the more general reader. The bibliographic references make no attempt at completeness, but have been chosen with the idea in mind of permitting those who desire to do so to consult the most important, and especially the more recent, treatises, monographs, and original articles which deal with the various matters discussed. A notable feature of Dr. Hirschfelder´s book is the liberality of illustrations; the majority of the figures are made from original drawings and tracings and are in pleasing contrast with the time-worn figures which pass from compilation to compilation.
