Excerpt from Classics of the Bar, Stories of the World´s Great Legal, Trials and a Compilation of Forensic Masterpieces, Vol. 3 One of the most remarkable cases known to the jurisprudence of any nation was the trial of Alexander William Holmes, at the April term of the Circuit Court of the United States, held at Philadelphia, in 1842. It appeared from the evidence that Holmes was a member of the crew of the good ship, William Brown which left Liverpool, March 13, 1841, bound for Philadelphia. On Monday night, April 19th, the vessel struck an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland, and began to sink. The lifeboats were launched, but - even as it was in that later hour of human history when the ill-fated Titanic went to the bottom of the sea and broke the heart of the world - the lifeboats were few; and, although there were on board only sixtyfive passengers, thirty-one went down with the sinking ship.
