The rough sketch of his intended preface, which is given in the imperfect state in which it was left, may suffice to show that the poem was intended chiefly as the vehicle for copious notes, on subjects to which he had devoted much thought and study; but unfortunately very few of his remarks had been thrown upon paper, when he was attacked by an illness which within a fortnight terminated fatally.
