Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Letters of George Borrow: To the British and Foreign Bible Society These were at once submitted to Dr. Knapp for his inspection, with an expression of sincere regret that they had been found too late for him to utilise. The Committee of the Bible Society decided that the letters should be published, and entrusted the editorship to Mr. Gordon Watt. That gifted scholar began preparations for the purpose, but within a few months he died, in the early prime of his usefulness and to the lasting grief of his friends. Eventually the Committee requested me to carry out the task which he left unfulfilled, and after much unavoidable delay it has at length been completed. The present volume includes all the letters, reports, and other documents, addressed by George Borrow to the Bible Society during his association with its work, which are in the Society´s possession. Nothing has been omitted, except a few brief advices of drafts forwarded or formal acknowledgments of money received, which are quite without interest. Most of the documents here printed are in Borrow´s original autograph, and bear the postmarks of their transmission. The facsimile letter in this volume will give some idea of the bold, clear script in which he wrote. In the comparatively few cases where the originals are missing, a contemporary copy has been preserved in the Society´s correspondence-books of the same date. Each document is here printed in extenso, without alterations or omissions - except in two cases, which are carefully noted: see pp. 11, 143. The footnotes given in some letters are all Borrow´s own. In one respect only have I ventured on any change. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
