I trust the work may prove useful and instructive to the many young officers and others whose careers lie in India, as well as of interest to the many who have relatives and friends in that country. I hope also it may induce the general public at home to take a move practical interest in that wonderful country with its teeming millions, and when possible to visit it, now that railway facilities make it easy and comfortable to do so. Lawrence, they both enjoyed, and by their gracious manner and kindly interest in the welfare of the people earned their devotion and gratitude.
