Excerpt from A Sermon Preached in the Chapel of the College of New Jersey: And an Address to the Members of the Senior Class, May 16th, 1858 Psalm xiv., 1. "The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God." The fool is the man that acts wickedly. In the Scriptures, sin is spoken of as folly, and the wicked man as a fool. On the other hand, piety is wisdom, and he that fears God is the wise man. The character described in the text is very much the same as that spoken of in the x. Psalm, v. 4, 11, 13: "The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God. God is not in all his thoughts," or, "all his thoughts are, there is no God." "He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten, he hideth his face; he will never see it. Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, thou wilt not require it." The words "in his heart," are not expressive of a wish, but are equivalent to the expression "to himself."
