Excerpt from Garfield Memorial Volume: Tribute From the Citizens of Jersey City Upon the death of President Garfield, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Jersey City designated several places in the city, at which public services would be held and suitable expression given of our great sorrow, and of the Nations loss of its Chief Executive Magistrate. One of these meetings was held at the Reformed Church on Bergen Avenue. At the conclusion of the meeting, the following resolution was unanimously adopted: "Resolved, That the Chair appoint a Committee of Three to consider the propriety of publishing a pamphlet containing the proceedings of this memorial meeting, or to join with any other committee or committees to prepare a more extended publication if such should be deemed advisable, and if such publication is made, to put the same on sale for the purpose of defraying the cost, or to solicit subscriptions for the same." The Chairman of the meeting appointed the undersigned as such committee. When the committee entered upon the discharge of the duties assigned to it, there was an expression given through the press to the effect that the volume should embrace the whole city, and that a sufficient number of sermons and addresses should be selected and published which would make a fair representation of the feelings and sorrow expressed on that occasion. In accordance with that wish, the committee have made as broad a selection as possible consistent with a proper sized volume.
