Excerpt from A Lecture on the Historic Evidence of the Authorship and Transmission of the Books of the New Testament: Delivered Before the Plymouth Young Men´s Christian Association, October 14, 1851 The object of the following Lecture is to present, in an intelligible and popular form, an accurate statement of the historic evidence which enables us to speak with certainty as to the authorship of the books of the New Testament, and also to describe the channels through which they have been transmitted to us; - these channels of transmission themselves bearing an important testimony to the books handed down. In the compass of a Lecture but an outline of some parts of the subject was possible; I have, therefore, stated very briefly those points about which no question is raised; and, thus, in such parts, I have rather pointed out the evidence than given it in detail: on those subjects, however, which are at all controverted, the evidence has been given with considerable minuteness.
