Excerpt from History of the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 7: And of the Nineteenth Till the Overthrow of the French Empire, With Particular Reference to Mental Cultivation and Progress The treatment of the history of Italy has necessarily been reserved for this volume, not merely because there was only room in the preceding one for an outline of Bonaparte´s military undertakings, but because the changes which this general effected are intimately connected with the history of the Directory in Paris. Carnot, Barras, and Reubel were the leaders among the French Directors in the year 1796; for Latourneur and La Revelliere Lepaux, notwithstanding their position, never gained any considerable influence, because they had not, like their colleagues, previously played a conspicuous ∂ they had been active only in the performance of particular duties and within their houses, but not mixed in the actual tumult of the Revolution. We refer those who have any liking for general descriptions of character, for an account of these five individuals, to Thiers, or rather to Thibaudeau, because the former is a mere rhetorician.
