That his intention was not carried into effect is to be deeply regretted. The ´Inquiry into the Life and Character of King Eadwig´ I selected from among a large number of the author´s manuscripts, which were kindly placed in my hands by the late Lady Holland, with permission to transcribe from them whatever I might deem desirable either for my own use or for publication. This tact, though powerfully written and bearing the impress of the author´s mind on almost every page yet seems to have been regarded by him as an unfinished publication.
