The plastic beauty of the city itself has been celebrated by many writers in prose and verse; and he who views it from a neighboring height, set like one of its own exquisite mosaics in an emerald frame, will not gainsay their praises. A narrow and fertile valley, watered by the golden Arno in its picturesque meanderings, and surrounded by a succession of hills, whose sunny slopes are rich in wine and olives, here offered the conditions of material prosperity.
