Excerpt from A Manual of Diseases of the Stomach I have often been asked by my old students to put into book form what I have tried to teach at the bedside and in the clinical laboratory of the diagnosis and treatment of Diseases of the Stomach that I have attempted in this volume to meet their desire by writing a short practical manual, which I trust the practitioner will find a useful introduction to the study of gastric diseases. It requires, perhaps, some courage to write a new book on this subject, for so considerable a number have recently been published that it seems superfluous to add to the list. But, for the most part, recent works on the diseases of stomach have either been large and chiefly adapted for the specialist or they have been too incomplete and theoretic to be very useful to the medical practitioner. This work aims at the middle course of being suitable for the student and practitioner, and it has at least the merit of being based almost entirely on personal experience and observation of gastric cases in my hospital and private practice. I have, however, on this account not wholly neglected to refer to the views and investigations of recent authors, and I have consulted the more important works on this subject as well as the articles which have appeared in the current European and American journals. Long experience as a teacher and examiner makes me sure that there is no subject which more requires to be presented clearly to the practitioner than that of Diseases of the Stomach. I have therefore tried, at not too great a length, to present the subjects dealt with in a simple and practical manner in the hope that all who desire to become more familiar with the diagnostic methods of gastric affections will find what they require in these pages. I have placed at the end of this book a Glossary giving, in outline, the laboratory apparati, reagents, and tests referred to in the text.
