Excerpt from The Historic Church: An Essay on the Conception of the Christian Church and Its Ministry in the Sub-Apostolic Age In 1888 and 1889 Dr Hort delivered a course of lectures on "The Early History and the Early Conceptions of the Christian Ecclesia." These lectures were published in 1897 under the title of "The Christian Ecclesia." Their purpose was to examine the evidence afforded by the writings of the New Testament as to the ideas underlying the Ecclesia of the Apostles. But the ground covered by the Lectures was only a preliminary to a much larger problem, the conceptions of the Christian Ecclesia as revealed in Christian history as a whole. It is with the second stage in this problem that the present investigation is concerned. The period we propose to examine, extending to the close of the second century, may be roughly called the sub-apostolic age. We shall give a careful consideration to all Christian writings that have come down to us from this period; and we shall set out in full the evidence, which they afford, as to the conception which their writers had of the Christian church. This period, which covers upwards of a hundred years, necessarily exhibits growth and development. Circumstances change; and the church, being a living organism, adapts itself to new conditions.
