The Author, who was for some time locally connected with this neighbourhood, is anxious that this connection should not pass unnoticed to the eyes of his many Yorkshire friends in issuing his first publication. Mr. Daniel, who has received encouragement from such gentlemen as Professor Blackie and Mr. Walter Besant, should, to my mind, prove capable of carrying public opinion. Professor Blackie writes: "Your subjects are good, and your style is good. "Be faithful to your genius, and never write without "a strong inspiration." Mr. Walter Besant, M.A., the eminent novelist, also wrote him: "Your poems "have merit and show promise." I have therefore much pleasure in stating a hope that this small volume, though it may be somewhat stamped with immaturity, will, with due allowance, find proper appreciation.
