When by the mysterious and inscrutable providence of God he was taken away from the Church and country, which he loved with the purity of a Christian and the ardour of a patriot, the manuscript was laid aside for a time; "though we sorrowed not as those without hope," yet to read the pencil notes traced by the hand of one so fondly revered, and to reflect at the same time, that these were the latest suggestions given to one on whom he had unsolicited bestowed the greatest kindness, and, above all, the inestimable boon of his friendship, was too heavy a task in recent sorrow. Even now the adoption of his suggestions in alterations, corrections, and additions, has been accompanied with much pain; for every note served only to show, more prominently, the value of the adviser, who had been prematurely taken away.
