Excerpt from Windsor a Poem, Historical and Imaginative I Venture to address a few words to you in a more free and neighbourly spirit than the reserve of a Preface admits of; and, I doubt not, you will listen to me with your wonted kindness. The praises of Windsor have inspired the verse of Pope and Denham; yet neither they nor any others have celebrated its glories to the extent they deserve. It is not enough to sing of the beautiful scenery by which we are surrounded, or to celebrate the grandeur of the Castle which overlooks our town. The generations that have passed away from Windsor in the silence of forgetfulness; the men of mighty name who have trodden its halls, its streets, and its parks; and the historical recollections which cling around its "cloud-capp´d towers;" a demand attention, as well from the poet as from the moralist. I have made a little attempt to supply this defect in our Windsor poetry; and, in the episodes here introduced, I have endeavoured to depict the spirit of the various ages from the first century of the Christian era downwards.
