The selection from them was made, and the papers returned to Cardinal Newman, in the summer of 1887. Since the return of these papers, other and important collections of letters have been placed at the Editor´s disposal, and much has been added - indeed, such a work can never be said to be finished, till every page has passed through the printer´s hands. In obedience to the original intention and lately expressed wish of the Cardinal, no time is lost in placing the volumes before the public. One passage in the Introduction makes it necessary to explain that it was in print before the deeply regretted death of Dr. Liddon.
