Mr. Higgins is a missionary of the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions - a very real man, doing a real and admirable work for his Church in the woods of the Northwest. Although some of the incidents of this story are taken directly from his experience, and many others are founded upon certain passages in his missionary career, it must not be inferred that the man himself bears any invidious resemblance to John Fairmeadow. It must be added that the story is not a tale of the lumbering industry but of a singular man at work among lumber-jacks.
