Excerpt from Notabilities in France and England Without any display, the writer of these sketches reveals much of his early life, and he is very frank in speaking of his own country. From his long exile he returned almost an Englishman in his views of morals and politics. He was subject to none of the illusions to which his native country is so prone, and did not dream of perfectibility by shaking off the fetters of monarchy. But he will reveal his views in his own words. The title of the work from which I have translated the following pages is, "Studies upon Men and Manners of the Nineteenth Century." It consists of recollections of youth, contemporary portraits, sketches of travel, and thoughts upon France. The writer is a Professor at the Paris Institute. It is reported that he is coming to this country to lecture; in that case our interest to know something of him from his works is increased. His stories interested me from the novelty and vividness of his description; and his observations, from their strong good sense and glow of moral feeling.
