Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Executive Committee for the Care, Government, and Management of the Free Academy The present volume contains a Catalogue of all the Books now belonging to the Library of the Free Academy. Those named in the Appendix have been added to the Library since this volume was prepared, and while passing through the press, making it complete to January 1, 1861. In 1852, Ephraim Holbrook, Esq., of this city, bequeathed the sum of $5,000 to be applied, at a future period, to the purchase of books for the Library. Nothing has been received from this fund. In 1857, Seth Grosvenor, Esq., of this city, also bequeathed to the Board of Education the sum of $30,000, to be permanently invested, and the income thereof to be expended, under certain conditions, in the purchase of books for the Library of the Free Academy. The income from this fund will soon be made available. The Library contains between eight and nine thousand volumes, and is rapidly increasing. A few books have been donated, and a small appropriation was made by the Board of Education when the Library was first opened; other than this, the books have been purchased from the funds appropriated by the State, from the Literature Fund. In arranging the catalogue, the Librarian had in view case and certainty of reference, and he believes that little, if any, trouble will be experienced in ascertaining what books are in the Library, and where they are to be found. The greatest care has been exercised, also, in making it as complete and correct as possible; and that few errors will be found, other than those of a typographical character, or those owing to the constant circulation of the books, while preparing the catalogue. It is hoped, however, that it will be found a complete key for unlocking the rich treasures of the Library.
