Excerpt from Standard Table of Electrochemical Equivalents and Their Derivatives: With Explanatory Text on Electrochemical Calculations, Solutions of Typical Practical Examples and Introductory Notes on Electrochemistry The methods of making electrochemical calculations involving these equivalents are described by means of a number of typical practical examples accompanied by explanatory notes. A brief description of some of the elementary principles of chemistry involved in such calculations, has been added. Some of the conceptions and simplified methods of calculation described in the text may differ from those more generally taught or found in textbooks; they are offered here merely as suggestions which lead to the same result as the older and more complicated ones; the latter are also described as alternatives to be used by those who prefer them. The rapid developments of recent years in the physical conceptions of electrochemical phenomena made it desirable to include an introductory description of them in a section on the Electronic Theory. This, and a section on Electrolysis which includes a brief explanation of the dissociation theory, have been prepared by the other author, Frederick H. Getman. The authors acknowledge their indebtedness to Dr. J. W. Richards for revising and bringing up to date his table of the valences which the elements have in their more usual combinations. Also to the Bureau of Standards for most of the fundamental constants and for valuable advice and assistance.
