Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Seasons This eminent Poet, whose "Seasons" and "Castle" of "Indolence" we now present, in a new and elegant form, to the public, was born at Ednam, Roxburghshire, on the 11th of September, 1700. His father, Thomas Thomson, was minister of the parish of Ednam, and seems to have stood high among his brethren, both in character and in talent. James was the eldest son. His mother, Beatrix Trotter, was the daughter of Mr. Trotter, of Fogo, a proprietor in Berwickshire. Shortly after Thomson was born, his father was transferred to the charge of Southdean, near Jedburgh. The country all around this district is romantic - eminently fitted for the education of a great rural bard. It is remarkable that almost all Scottish poets have been born in regions of more than ordinary interest and beauty. Burns appeared in the beautiful environs of Ayr, and within sight of the shattered peaks of Arran. Sir Walter Scott was inspired by the scenery of his "own romantic town," - and so had been Allan Ramsay and poor Fergusson before him. Beattie was reared amidst the bare, but bold and striking scenery of the Howe - of the Mearns; and Ross, author of the "Fortunate Shepherdess," lived and died, and now has found his ever lasting resting-place beside the lonely waters of Loch Lea.
