Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Oration Delivered in Wallingford, on the 11th of March 1801, Before the Republicans of the State of Connecticut, at Their General Thanksgiving, for the Election of Thomas Jefferson to the President and of Aaron Burr to the Vice Presidency of the United When a Southern slave breaks his setters of bondage and declares for liberty, a hue and cry is raised, the daring culprit is apprehended and death is his portion. When a Northern slave declares for the emancipation of himself and his white brethren, all the masters are in an uproar, the pursuit is close, all means are fair and the daring wretch is doomed to all the vengeance of his oppressors. But a Southern slave has only one master; a northern one has many, yes, he has a master to every power and faculty, to every thought and opinion and on every subject. It is not necessary to the character of a slave that he have a chain about his leg, or a rope about his neck. Invisible slavery is more dreadful, extensive and intolerable than visible slavery, because in the first case the matters will often deny its existence. Ye Northern masters, say to the man, whom you are dragging to unmerited execution, the weather is fine over-head, the landscapes are beautiful. Tell the man, whom you are starving, that the country is full of wheat fields and that corn meal brings an high price in foreign markets. Tell the man, whom you have chained in a dungeon, that the atmosphere is charming and that exercise is conducive to health. Go, pray to your white slaves at the northward, that they are free. Will any of these men be amused by you? Is it not a fact, thoroughly known abroad, that ecclesiastical and civil tyranny have formed a junction in New England, for the express purpose of enslaving the minds of men on religious and political subjects? Not one reflecting man is ignorant of this fact. I have denominated the members of this junction, The Self Stiled Friends of Orders, and have endeavored to designate them so clearly, that every man may be able to distinguish between the master and the slave.
